Police nab 20 Malawians at Mwanza border: Had their passports already stamped elsewhere

Police in boarder district of Mwanza have arrested 20 young men for allegedly wanting to cross the Malawi boarder dishonestly.

Mwanza Police Spokesperson Victoria Chirwa said the 20 were arrested around 8.00pm on Tuesday as they tried to cross the Mwanza boarder.

She said the law enforcers apprehended the group after discovering that their passports were already stamped as they approached the boarder.

“Our officers manning Mwanza roadblock were surprised with the contingent walking on foot to cross the boarder into Mozambique so they stopped them. And upon interrogations they said they were crossing to Mozambique enroute to South Africa but surprisingly all their passports were already stamped,” she explained.arrest

Chirwa said the men revealed they had agreed with a certain Malawian that he would pick them on his five tonner lorry in Mozambique side at a place called Balaka.

The police spokesperson said the men indicated that they had stamped their passports at the boarder earlier in the day.

“We handed them over to the Immigration Officials at the boarder to authenticate the passports and also ascertain if they were indeed stamped at the boarder as they claimed,” she said.

“When one is travelling out the passport is supposed to be stamped at the boarder and not at home or in somebody’s office, so once our immigration colleagues are done with their investigations we will take the next step.”

The 20 men, according to Chirwa, are from the Eastern districts of Balaka, Machinga and Mangochi.

Mangochi is one of the country’s districts with large population of people living in South Africa and hundreds trek their every month.
