Police officers arrested over theft of MTL cables
Malawi police have arrested their own officers in Lilongwe for theft of MTL cables.
Police on Friday arrested Constable Simon Mukhito – (no relation to Peter Mukhito former police IG) -whose service number is B6697, 21 and hails from Mathotho Village, Traditional Authority Mphuka in Thyolo and is based at Lilongwe C Division and Constable Zakeyu Chapondaminga whose service number is B6698, 27, from Kadambo Village in Traditional Authority Masasa in Ntcheu and is also based at Lilongwe C Division after being found with the stolen cables at a house in the township of Kawale in Lilongwe.
Insiders said the two were busted by Escom officials and some police officers who were tipped by members of the community that there were vehicles dropping cables at a house in Kawale.
“At first some people thought the cables belong to Escom and informed company officials who sought police help to bust the racket. They raided the house and found out that there was at least one tone of cables,” said the source.
“When Escom officials found out that the cables does not belong to them, the alerted MTL who confirmed that the cables were theirs and this led to the arrest of the two police officers,” added the source.
“One of them mentioned his colleague at C Company and they are both in custody at Kawale Police Station,” explained the source.
MTL officials said they have since logged a complaint against the two at Kawale Police station where the two are being kept.
