Police on alert over Easter holidays

Malawi Police Service has stepped up security ahead of and during Easter holidays in fulfillment of its mandate to secure people’s lives and property.

National Police Spokesperson, James Kadadzera said experience has shown that during the annual festivities such as Easter, many robbers use different tactics to rob people of their property.

He said Police have engaged an extra gear, which among other things, include conducting patrols in all hotspots to reduce crimes.

“We are on alert over Easter period. Right now, a number of police officers have already been deployed in all the areas to carry out day and night patrols to crack down criminals. We are doing this to protect people’s lives and property,” the Spokesperson said.

Kadadzera disclosed that the Traffic Police Department has increased Police check points to monitor the fitness of vehicles plying the country’s roads to reduce accidents.

“We know that some motorists over speed or overtake other cars unnecessarily. This will not be allowed during Easter. All motorists are encouraged to observe speed limits,” he advised.

Kadadzera has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and call the Police once they notice anything suspicious to ensure that people enjoy Easter holiday without fear of crime and accidents.

“We all need to be security conscious. Those going to worship places or retreats should leave one or two people behind to safeguard their premises. The people left at home should be able to make sound decisions if faced with anything suspicious,” he added.

Easter period is one of the important events on the Christian calendar that is marked by processions of Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday followed by the Way of the Cross on Good Friday preceded by church services in remembrance of the tribulations as well as his resurrection.

This year, Easter will be observed from April 19, 2019 Good Friday through to April 22, 2019 Easter Monday
