Police ‘smoke out’ robbers in Shopping mall ceiling

Malawi police said they have finally arrested two suspected robbers who sneaked into the ceiling of the Chichiri Shopping Mall that houses the South African chain-stores, Game Stores and Shoprite.

Police said on Thursday that they ‘smoked out’ two suspects who were holed up in the ceiling and disclosed their identities as G4S guard Kondwani Mwantani, 25, and Denis Chilemba, 23, both from Masuku Village in the area of T/A Mpama in Chiradzulu but resident in Blantyre.

The drama began to unfold after the robbers climbed into the ceiling in the wee hours of last Friday waiting to pounce on the shop.

The two suspects looked frail and tired.

“We have arrested the two G4S guards and found them with two knives, bottle of water and a packet of foodstuffs which they were eating in their hideout,” said Southern Region Police spokesperson Edna Ligowe.

She also informed that about K18,000 were recovered from them. The money is suspected to have been stolen from the shop.

According to Police, Mwantani has been a guard at the shopping mall for two years.

Ligowe said the suspects will be taken to court “soon”.

Chichiri Shopping Mall is Malawi’s largest shopping mall. It houses several local and international businesses, especially South African chain-stores.
