Police summon newspaper editors over Chasowa story

More drama is unveiling in the death of the fourth year Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa. A few hours after Police arrested the whistle blower Duncan Phiri, police were at it again summoning editors of Weekend Nation and Malawi News who published the revealing story on Saturday.

Police head of Criminals Investigation Department summoned Weekend Nation editor George Kasakula and released him after some interrogation and minutes later deputy editor of Malawi News Innocent Chitosi was also summoned.

The summoning of the two editors follows the arrest and interrogation of Phiri in the morning of the Wednesday.

A police source said the police may demand recordings of the interviews for the stories. But a media practitioner said it would be unethical to release such recordings.

Pemba: Death threatened for reporting Chasowa story

“The media must protect sources at all costs. Revealing the sources would be betraying them and it is totally unethical,” the guru said.

Sources at both Nation Publications Limited and Blantyre Newspapers Limited confirmed the summoning of the editors.

The summoning of the Nation editor was also posted on Facebook social network.

The two stories revealed the whole deal how Phiri and his colleagues dealt with the police. The revelations also led to the circumstances of the death of Chasowa which implicate Inspector General of Police and commissioner of police for the south.

Sources said the police head of CID who is based at the Police headquarters in the capital city Lilongwe travelled on Monday to hunt for Phiri.

Meanwhile, Polytechnic students have demanded the removal of Kamu Guard services at the college claiming that they are connected to the death of Chasowa.

Two students claimed that the guards who were on duty on the day Chasowa died were removed and replaced by youth cadets from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

The removed guards went missing and police claimed that they were also hunting for them.

And the reporter who wrote the story Phillip Pemba of Nation Publications Limited says he is receiving death threats.
