Poly student assaulted for dating married man

The Blantyre Magistrates court has convicted and fined Bernadetta Zuze for assaulting a Polytechnic student Martha Kafuliza  accusing her of  having sexual escapades with her husband.

Zuze, who pleaded guilty to the two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious damage, was fined K10, 000 on first count and K5, 000 on second count or serve four months in prison with hard labour (IHL). She paid the fines.

According to information presented in court, Zuze in May , together with two of her relatives, pounced and abducted Kafuliza to her house where she was stripped naked, shaved and beaten.

Kafulia: Assaulted

The court was told that Zuze together with her accomplices held Kafuliza hostage for eight hours (from 10am to 6pm) and took pictures of her while  literally naked, which they kept in their mobile phones.

She was, however, rescued by her relatives who were tipped of the  incident by well-wishers before reporting the matter to Chilobwe Police station that led to the arrest of Zuze.

And in the police report tendered in court, Zuze disclosed that she resorted to assault Kafuliza who once dated music band Nyasa Guruz lead singer, Papa (Jones Kwangwani) after gathering enough evidence that she was indeed dating her husband Amos Zuze, a driver at Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom).

“After having enough information that implicated Martha, I confronted her and she accepted to have been in relationship with my husband but she said the affair was over. However, I found out that they were still seeing each other, and then I decided to take action,” reads part of the report.

Passing the judgment, First Grade Magistrate Diana Mangwana said she has fined Zuze for being first offender despite committing a serious offense.

Martha Kafuliza is studying diploma in business administration at Polytechnic, a constituent of University of Malawi.

Both Zuze and Kafuliza are residents of populous township of Zingwangwa in Blantyre.
