The opposition People’s Party (PP) through its spokesperson Ken Msonda has faulted Sports and Culture Minister and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Parliamenterian Grace Chiumia for labelling President Arthur Peter Mutharika as ‘Life President’.
Chiumia made the reamarks at a gathering at a Muhlakho Wa Alomwe fundraising event which took place at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) last Friday.
Reacting to the development, Msonda told Nyasa Times that PP as a party never took the remarks seriously.
But the PP Publicist asked the minister not to claim the remarks came as a result of the slipperly of the tongue.
“The honorable minister was simply telling the gathering that she doesnt see anyone in DPP taking over the party leadership after APM’s term of office as DPP President. Our understanding as PP was that the Honourable Minister is telling the nation that DPP has leadership Bankrupcy” said Msonda.
However, Msonda described Chiumia’s comments as careless and senseless.
“Let us not waste time commenting on careless and senseless remarks coming from politicians trying to buy favours from the head of state. No person with the right frame of mind in a multiparty dispensation can change the republican constitution and bring in the so called life presidency. Whatever reason behind such undemocratic line of thinking is not possible,” said Msonda.
He addedd; “We (PP) didn’t want to labour ourselves commenting on Grace Chiumia’s undemocratic line of thinking because PP viewed it as an internal party crisis.”
