PP supporters fault Mwenefumbo on parallel structures in Usisya

Residents of the Malawi’s northern lakeshore area of Usisya, are demanding ruling People’s Party  authorities  to stop the party’s regional chairperson for the north, Frank Mwenefumbo, from forming parallel structures of PP in the area, to avoid wrangles that might arise among supporters of the aspiring candidates.

Mwenefumbo and some regional committee officials have been restructuring the party’s district and constituency committees in the region ahead of the forth coming elections, but Usisya residents, say they are shocked with the development because the system is biased.

For instance, the residents say, the officials are dropping people who are pioneers of the party and those who are supporting one of the aspirants Watson Katawa Nyasulu.

“We are very shocked because those being appointed by Mwenefumbo and his team are those who were in his former party Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and those who supports Katawa’s opponent Ephraim Mganda Chiume (Minister of  Foreign Affairs), while all who suffered at the expense of the party during the DPP regime are being dropped. We feel this is very bad and President Joyce Banda must sort out such issues as soon as possible because they bring confusion during primaries,” said one the residents, Amos Banda.

Banda alleged that the Usisya scenario is influenced by the area’s incumbent Parliamentarian Ephraim Chiume to suppress one of the aspirants, Katawa Nyasulu, who is attracting more support from the residents.

Also expressing sadness on the development is one of the area’s chiefs who denied to be named for fear of reprisals. He said the development indicates that Mwenefumbo and some regional committee members are trying to impose candidates for the forthcoming elections hence establishing biased committees.

“We feel their aim is to draw support for a particular candidates and not necessary restructuring the party. However, let me warn them that the party will yield nothing in 2014 from Usisya because we are tired of being imposed candidates,” said the traditional leader.

Mwenefumbo justified the re-structuring of the committee is to bring vibrancy for the party in the north.

The party’s regional director of women, Cliffa Kondowe who is among the officials moving with Mwenefumbo maintained that the appointment of new committee members is geared at strengthening the party’s support.

She however, denied commenting on reports that those being appointed are former DPP members and supporters of Chiume saying she is not mandated to talk to the media.

But Nyasulu who feel being betrayed by Mwenefumbo and Chiume confirmed that the new committees are geared at suppressing him during the party’s primary elections.

“What is being done by Mwenefumbo and some regional committee officials is foolish politics. They are supporting Mganda Chiume, and I have banned them from holding meetings in Usisya because president Banda is already winning in the area regardless of Mwenefumbo or Mganda’s hands,” said Nyasulu.

He said he has since lodged a complaint to party’s authorities for immediate action.

During the last year’s Mzimba central by election, PP lost to independent candidate Mavuto Kachali because people disliked the party’s candidate who was just imposed on them.
