PP’s Mwenefumbo, Mwalwanda rivalry turns ugly: House set on fire!

The rivalry between supporters of aspiring parliamentarian for the ruling People’s Party, (PP) Frank Mwenefumbo and the incumbent Cornelius Mwalwanda of the same party, who are battling for Karonga Central constituency turned ugly over the weekend when a supporter of Mwalwanda whose camp is known as PP B had his house burned for suspected Mwenefumbo supporters who are known as PP A.

Supporters of Mwalwanda are forced to move out of the constituency, saying it is for Mwenefumbo supporters only.

Geoffrey Gondwe who is a supporter of Cornelius Mwalwanda PP “B” told Nyasa Times that he was beaten up on Friday evening on his way home from the party function by   supporters of Frank Mwenefumbo PP “A”.

“It was evening on Friday when I was coming from the party’s function I saw a group of people and started beating me and I recognize one of them after mention his name they started beating me more and more and later they left me in pain,” said Gondwe.

This forced  him to report the matter to the police on Saturday.

But without knowing he was putting his life on danger, Gondwe was also attacked on his way back home by the same people together with his friend.

“We run to the chief’s  house but those angry supporters started beating us in front of the chiefs to the point that the chief failed to control the situation and we escaped into a nearby grocery shop. The angry supporters  run away upon seeing the police who came to quell the situation,” said Gondwe.

And later in the middle of night his house was set on fire.

Gondwe complained that his life is in danger and his rivals are maintaining that every Mwalwanda supporter should vacate the area, without doing so they will disappear.

“I am living in fear for my family as all the food stuffs we kept  were burned down and all my children clothes, kitchen utensils and farming materials are in ashes and as I am telling you I did not sleep at my house and the whole day we were out,” said a father of four children.

Police in Karonga confirmed having received the reports but declined to comment further saying investigations are still under away..

Chiefs in Karonga central constituency have  been complaining about bloody rivalry between supporters of Mwenefumbo and Mwalwanda fearing that it would cost lives of people during campaign period if not nipped in the bud.
