President Banda to act on VP’s appointment as MEC overseer

President Joyce Banda will announce her stand on the issue concerning the appointment of Vice President Khumbo Kachali as the overseer of all operations at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), government spokesman has said.

President Banda appointed Kachali to look after the operations of the national electoral body a move she defends as constitutional. She even argues that it is just a shift of the responsibility from her office to the office of the vice president and that there is no sinister motive behind the move as she had no competition and was confident of winning the 2014 polls.

But the electoral stakeholders say the move is “suspicious” as the country is close to hold first   tripartite elections in 2014.

Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu who is government spokesman said Thursday that the government has been following the matter with keen interest and that it will act soon.

Kunkuyu: JB to take action

“The government of Malawi has followed with keen interest the healthy debate on the oversight role that honourable Khumbo Kachali, Vice President of the Republic of Malawi assumed at MEC in the recent cabinet that Her Excellency the president appointed on 6th December” said Kunkuyu in a statement seen by Nyasa Times.

“The government wishes to inform the general public that Her Excellency the President Madame Joyce Banda who is the appointing authority will address the matter within the next few days,”  informed Kunkuyu.

Meanwhile, Kunkuyu says the government through the Information Ministry will continue updating the general public on any development regarding the issue.
