President Mutharika says he cannot order arrest of Chaponda: Blasts Chakwera, Kamlepo during MBC program

Malawi President Peter Mutharika on Thursday night spoke on the issue of former Agriculture minister George Chaponda and corruption for the first time since he fired his closest ally from cabinet.

President Mutharika: Says Chakwera is irresponsible opposition leader

In a program on state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Mutharika commented on a wide range of issues from opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera to the media, in an hour interview.

Mutharika said his administration is doing all it can to stop corruption and Malawians should understand that he has limits to how he can do things in Malawi because of the law.

“Some people want me to order the arrest of. Hon Chaponda. I cannot do that. If I do that, the same people would be accusing me of excessive powers, they would be talking of trimming my powers,” he said.

He therefore said it was up to the Anti-Corruption Bureau to make its decision on how to prosecute Chaponda.

Mutharika also called Leader of Opposition in parliament as irresponsible.

He accused Chakwera of opposing things just for the sake of opposing, saying he is not constructive in his criticisms.

Mutharika then lined up a number of development programs which his administration has done since the Democratic Progressive Party  (DPP)came to power and other development programs on the cards.

The Malawi leader therefore said it was irresponsible for Chakwera to be painting the government bad always when there was a rosy part of it.

He also laughed of allegations that his late brother, the former president Bingu wa Mutharika looted public coffers and amassed wealth amounting to K92 billion which he stashed in foreign accounts.

“If the economy was affected by the K30 billion cashgate, what about K92 billion, the country would have collapsed,” he said.

He also said the issue of seven cabinet ministers involved in the K236 billion cashgate was just not true, saying this was created by Rumphi east MP Kamlepo Kalua and picked by a newspaper (Malawi News) without any verification.

“If this was true, the opposition would have named the cabinet ministers in parliament where they have immunity. No one could sue them on issues they say in parliament,” he said.

He therefore said it was not true that his government was gagging the opposition from speaking out on the corrupt cabinet ministers, saying if they existed, they would have been unveiled in parliament.

The man is not presidential material, period!

  8. Byron says:

Such remarks and emotion from a president speak volumes of how unqualified Peter Mutharika has been to become president from day one. Mutharika was passed his prime long time ago. It is not safe to elect old leaders for top positions of the land because their memory is not strong and have strong paranoia. Their decision making is questionable and doesn’t favor the poor.

Mutharika has contradicted himself for saying he doesn’t have powers to direct the arrest of Chaponda when it is on record that he ordered the arrest of Hyena Aniva in Nsanje. Should I guess that presidential powers are only targeted at those who are poor and are not part of government? So where are the rights of all citizens of the land? For what I know is that every citizen has equal rights to impartial justice. Mutharika is setting the precedence for selective justice,an unfortunate situation in a democratic country.

He is talking about ACB having the powers and prerogative to apprehend and arrest financial public offenders while behind the scenes, he is suffocating the bureau’s effectiveness and potency. We know that any case involving DPP officials will hardly see the light at the end of the tunnel. Peter Mutharika has made a lot of noise about Joyce Banda’s Cashgate but folds his tail now when new revelations expose DPP’s hypocrisy in clandestine dealings involving government’s purse. Peter and company have looted and continue to do so at an unchecked alarming rate. Donors have withheld their funding because they can’t trust Mutharika’s government. But why are these old men so callous that their corruption actions are so infinite? Do they care about the future of the country? At this point we can only say God should look into it.

  10. You’re passive that’s why you can’t order the arrest of your compliance,Most of us knows that you are his puppet,Chaponda is the one who calls the shots

  11. hoosen says:

Mr President, you ordered the police to arrest ERIC ANIVA but for chaponda you cannot. your statement tells mawians that ou are also involved.you can defend chaponda in a silent way but not to extent of going on public and make that remarks. mind malawians are suffering because of you guys.

  12. observer says:

vuto la ukalamba ndilimeneri- lero anenena za aniva amangidwe- mawa ayi ndilibe mphamvu- is this really a law professor – why cant he simply understand principle of precedence- that he himself had set- awa maloza awa- where was this man when we were linning up vehicles at filling station during bingus last days- was that not economic collapse- we need to take this guy to india to examine him if he is really ok-up stairs-

  13. Mkapu says:

U can order arrest of hyenas not bulldozer chaponda the rattle snake…kikiki
    Country gone to the dogs

  14. Mwakipiki says:

What I know in Malawi, authorities arrest you first and then investigate, especially if you are found in possession of goods suspected to have been stollen. This was the case with the guys who were found with stashes of cash in their car boots. They were straight away arrested for money laundering and cash gate. But on Chaponda I have come to learn that some people are more equal than others.

    1. Wawaru says:

He is afraid that once he orders Chaponda’s arrest, he will be revealed as he is an accomplice to Chaponda. He can only order an arrest if only it is an opposition party member and a nobody like me who cannot afford a lawyer. Koma poti ndi Chaponda ndiye alibe mphamvu. Prisons are for the poor basi!

  15. Achewafe timati kulamula bvumbwe nkulinga uli ndi nkhuku. Peter Mathanyula ordered the arrest of Nsanje hyna Aniva and he was arrested. Why is it difficult for him to order the arrest of Chaponda? Birds of the same feathers flock together.

  16. COLBY says:

I HOPE IT’S HIGH TIME NOW THAT MALAWI SHOULD AVOID POLITICIZING EVERYTHING. FORMER MINISTER CHAPONDA IS ALSO A MALAWIAN CITIZEN AND UNDER THE LAW FOR THAT MATTER. INVESTIGATIONS TAKE SOMETIME. IF IT WAS A MALPRACTICE MIXED WITH FOWL ADMINISTRATION, THE LAW WILL TAKE ITS COURSE. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAVE GONE FOWL IN MALAWI. LET UPROOT ALL THESE SKIRMISHES SO THAT WE GO TOGETHER AS ONE FAMILY. OPPOSING IS GOOD BUT IT HAS A BAGGAGE OF COURTESY. SO TOO IS SHIELDING OF THIEVES WHEN THEY REALLY EXIST. LET US ALTOGETHER THE LOST GLORY OF THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA. CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY.

  17. Hetherwick says:

If this was what the president said on the Malawi Government controlled power house, then I see sense in the arguments to the fact that he has limitations. However, if limitations come only because of protecting Chaponda, then it is unfair game. Also opposition leader needs scrutiny when saying things o public interest. Let us share the little cake we have and make presidency rotational.

Koma Elick Anniva amene amapangidwa Hire, nde kulamula kuti amangidwe, Chaponda ai, What’s that?, mukudziwana.

  21. Fuvung'ondo says:

WHEN IT COMES TO CHAPONDA YOU HAVE NO POWERS, BUT WHEN IT WAS THE POOR HYENA GUY IN NSANJE YOU HAD FULL PRESIDENTIAL POWERS TO OLDER THE ARREST………… SHUPIT ZAKO.

  22. Mugonapamuhanya says:

The noisy empty MP from my home should never be taken seriously. He has smoked weed for too long. Why is he naming and shaming the ministers in parliament where he is immune to any prosecution? He was sponsored to parliament with cashgated money and he wants to divert people’s attention.

    1. wangawanga says:

Have you forgotten that Attorney general gave them a legal advice not to disclose those names?
