PS Makileni moved out of Local Govt Ministry

Government has moved Christopher Makileni from the Ministry of Local Government where he served as Principal Secretary during the Joyce Banda administration.

A letter from the Office of the President and Cabinet served on him on Wednesday, 4th June, 2014, ordered Makileni to report to the Office of the President and Cabinet with immediate effect.

Makileni served as an Under Secretary in the Office of the Vice President when relations between the late President, Bingu wa Muntharika and his vice, Joyce Banda went sour.

When Banda ascended to power, she made him Director of Finance and Administration before promoting him to the position of Principal Secretary.

During his one year service as a Principal Secretary, Makileni championed the promotion of District Commissioners to S2/P2 with some at S3/P3 grades. He also normalized the appointment of Financial Analyst’s to the positions of Chief accountants for the local councils.

However, his stay in the Ministry was never short of controversies, he once came out in the limelight after he fought with a driver, a Mr. Kamanga due to a miss understating on the use of a project vehicle.

During the run-up to the Tripartite Elections, Makileni departed from the norm of the Civil Service of being politically neutral by openly campaigning for Banda.

He is also the one who has brought confusion among chieftainships in the central region where he elevated several village headmen to the position of sub-chief at will, thereby by-passing dictates of customs and tradition.

Meanwhile, there is jubilation at the Ministry of Local Government where junior officers and drivers are celebrating the departure of the most feared person at the ministry.
