Rains cut off East bank road: Chikwawa secondary school closed after damage

Heavy rains have cut off the busy East bank road which passes through agricultural production areas of Mkhathe, Livunzu and Fatima.

Villagers get on a canoe to safer place from their washed away homes.

One of the ward councilors in the area Alex Mulonya said the area is now an island and asked the government to swiftly rehabilitate the road.

The heavy rains which were accompanied by heavy winds also damaged over 300 houses.

Meanwhile, students at Chikwawa secondary school have been sent home because of damaged buildings at the school due to the heavy rains.

District commissioner for Chikwawa Ali Phiri said officers from his office are on the ground to assess the damage and the needs of the affected people.
