Rev. Kanthiti quits Zambezi Evangelical Church, establishes new ministry

One of the longest serving clerics of Zambezi Evangelical Church (ZEC), Reverend Harlex Kanthiti , has ended his 18 years of service in dramatic fashion by announcing his resignation at the church and formation of new ministry where he is now the General Overseer, Nyasa Times has established.

Rev. Kanthiti, who has served in various senior portfolios at ZEC, broke the news in an exclusive interview with Nyasa Times .

Personal reasons

The cleric said he has quit his former church citing personal reasons. He further disclosed that his decision to quit the church came in 2010 when God spoke to him and told him to establish new ministry.

Reverend Harlex Kanthiti

“It is true I have quit ZEC because I am fulfilling what God told me to do. He (God) spoke to me on August 4, 2010 and told me to quit Zambezi so that I establish another ministry and be full time there.

“So since 2010 I have been following up on this dream by establishing structures of the church across the country as well outside countries like Mozambique. Having achieved that I felt it was time to go,” said Rev. Kanthiti.

Asked on whether he has severed ties with the church due to the ongoing leadership wrangles that have been gripping the church for years now, Kanthiti hinted that it could be one of the reasons but said does not want to throw the name of his former church in the mud.

ZEC has been hitting headlines in recent years for wrong reasons and at one time it had to take the intervention of heavily armed police men to calm situation at the church’s Chipata congregation in Chimwankhunda, Blantyre following clashes between church members of opposing camps.

But while admitting that leadership skirmishes are still raging on in the church, Kanthiti remained tight lipped to divulge more about the differences if at all they are linked to his departure.

New ministry

He added: “The church differences have been there since time immemorial. I don’t want to say bad things about ZEC, you mean just because I have left then I should go out and about manifesting bad about the church? No that wouldn’t make sense at all. I’m done with Zambezi I’m now focusing on my own ministry.”

The new ministry according to Rev. Kanthiti has is known as Hope in Christ Care International Ministries and its headquarters is in Chirimba Township along the Zalewa road.

ZEC has been going through patchy road in recent years and this has consequently contributed to departure of several ministers who have either formed their own churches or have joined existing ones a development that poses threat to growth and stability in the church.

Efforts to talk to ZEC officials to comment on the resignation of one of their strong pillars were unsuccessful as they were not readily available.
