Rumphi man jailed 10 years for defiling 7-year-old girl
The Rumphi first grade magistrate court on Monday sentenced a 52 year old man to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for defiling a 7 year old girl.
Rumphi first grade magistrate Bentry Kumwenda sent to jail 52 year old Thomson Kalua after finding him guilty of defilement contrary to section 138 of the penal code.
Magistrate Kumwenda said a day can’t pass without presiding over a defilement case.
He said the courts have an obligation to protect the lives of innocent children from sexual offenders.
He said it is against this background that the court sentenced the accused to 10 years jail term in order to send a strong signal to the would be offenders.
Facts before the court are that the convict defiled the girl on 15 March at Mtangwanika location.
Police prosecutor sergeant Florence Mlanje said during the material day, the convict dragged the girl to his house where he defiled her.
She said an elder sister to the victim saw semens coming from the girl’s private parts and reported the matter to parents.
The prosecutor said a medical examination conducted at Rumphi district hopsital confirmed that the girl was defiled.
The police prosecutor therefore pleaded with the court to mete a stiff penalty saying defilement cases are on the increase in the district.
The suspect was arrested the same day and charged with defilement.
The accused comes from Chatumbwa village, T/A Chikuramayembe in Rumphi district.
