Scorpions Hockey Club sends an SOS, need K4 million

National Hockey League champions, the Scorpions have called on well wishers to assist them in their quest to participate in the continental championship slated for November in Zimbabwe.

The Scorpions need to raise K4 million to cater for expenses while participating in the African Hockey Club Championship for a period of close to a month.

The Clubs fundraising coordinator, Alex Mpasa said the defending champions have no sponsor and they used cash prizes to run the club.

“As of now, we have no sponsors, so we use our winnings to support ourselves for example, last season, we got K90 000 for winning the league and K30 000 for winning a bonanza.

“We have used that money to buy sticks and jerseys in preparation for the trip,” said Mpasa.

He said some private companies had started making pledges but they were still looking for more assistance.

“We have K600 000 in pledges but we are still searching. Companies might wish to sponsor and have their brands on our jersey, that’s ok with us,” he added.

Secretary General for the Hockey Association of Malawi, Krishna Achuthan could not be reached for comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Jamieson Ndalama said his office is not aware of the programme and could not therefore comment on the issue.

“First of all, let me say that I’m hearing it from you, I do not have information on that issue and it would be hard for me to comment on that,” said Ndalama.

Asked if government can come in if the issue is brought to its attention, he said the authorities (HAM) know the procedures.

Last year, Genetrix Hockey Club participated in the same tournament in Zambia and was eliminated in the 1st round after losing their games. Indomitable Sharkia of Egypt won the edition for the record 20th time.

The African Hockey Federation has 17 member states others being Egypt, Botswana, Nigeria, Togo, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Namibia, Libya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco and Sudan.
