Scorpions win Malawi hockey league with a game in hand

The Scorpions can, now, easily throw themselves in sea of celebration after unseating Genetrix on the summit of Monolux hockey league men’s category log table, thereby becoming this year’s champions.

Scorpions last weekend defeated the league’s title hopefuls, Genetrix by 1-0 to top the table in a contest that overturned and wiped out all the hopes for the Genetrix to pocket the trophy this year.

Pachalo Kibombwe scored the only goal for Scorpions turning his team into 2012 Monolux Paints Hockey League men’ category winners.

Genetrix had, for some time; lead the league table with Scorpions trailing on the bottom. However, the contest proved too hot for the Genetrix to handle as it surrendered the lead by ending on third position.

Braves beaten to the title by Scorpions

Scorpions with a game in hand against Falcons, are currently leading the table with 14 points, but either a win or loss in the last game will not change a thing as all other teams believed to be contenders have finished their games.

Braves has 13 points on second position having lost no game in second round of the league while Genetrix has 12 points on third position.

According to Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) vice secretary, Wanthaza Mughogho, Scorpions will be officially declared champions during their last game against Falcons who are trailing on the bottom of log table.

“The only remaining game between Falcons against Scorpions will only be a ceremonial one since the winner is already known. Teams in both categories-men and women- were competing under Round Robin 11-aside format and that prizes will only be awarded to the top three in each category,” Mughogho.

Scorpions will pocket K90, 000 as champions while Braves, on second position, will take home K60, 000 and the third, Genetrix gets K30, 000. While in women’s category the first position will get K60, 000, second position K30, 000 and the third position will pocket K20, 000.

“What is remaining is for women category to finish their remaining games then we will hand over the trophies and prize money to the declared champions as well as runners up. The league has run for almost three months,” said Mughogho.

In the women’s league Genetrix is currently equal with points with Simba and the decider game slated for October 20 will be between the two teams with the winner to be the crowned champions. Braves women have finished on third position.

Six teams registered in women category, thus, Braves, Genetrix, Falcons, Scorpions, Sports Complex (Simba) and Nyala McCoy. In men grouping, there were five teams competing, Genetrix, Nyala, Scorpions, Braves and Falcons.

Monolux Paints is sponsoring hockey to the tune of K600, 000. The money is shared between two hockey leagues, the 11 aside and six aside with each league getting K300, 000.

The six aside league and eight aside (tournament) are usually played before the main showpiece, 11 aside league. The six and eight aside games are always regarded as starters to assess the fitness of players.
