Amon Nkhata, from Traditional Authority Maulawo in Mzimba District and living at Soziberi Line, was found trapped inside the transformer cage after he received an electric shock while trying to cut an electrical cable.

He was found alive but in severe pain, with serious injuries to one hand and one leg, and part of his hand badly burnt.

ESCOM sent its Faults and Security teams to the scene, along with police. Police then took Nkhata to Mzuzu Central Hospital for treatment.

Police are continuing their inquiries before Nkhata is taken to court. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence and a heavy fine.

Energy Minister Dr Jean Chifuniro Mathanga has voiced concern over the rising theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure, which she says is slowing efforts to expand access to power across the country.

She told Parliament that at least 100 areas had reported thefts or destruction of transformers, cables and other equipment.

“To address the problem, the Ministry is rolling out measures aimed at protecting public investment and keeping electrification projects on schedule.

“These include working with law enforcement, local leaders and communities to increase surveillance and reporting of suspects,” she said.

ESCOM Board Member Welford Sabola said vandalism was undermining the corporation’s efforts to improve supply and extend access.

ESCOM has warned the public against stealing, tampering with or accessing electricity installations without authorisation, and urged people to report suspicious activity to the corporation or police.

Transformers and substations carry high-voltage equipment that can cause fatal shocks and severe burns, the company said.
