Members of Parliament Wednesday asked government to improve the country’s security and ensure that the life and properties of Malawians is secure.
This follows an attack of the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Dr Lazarus Chakwera house on Wednesday morning.
It is reported that over 25 thugs invaded the premises of Dr. Chakwera in the wee hours of Wednesday morning but could not fulfill their mission as neighbours and well wishers managed to alert the police in time who then rushed for his rescue.
Presenting the issue in Parliament, Member of Parliament for Lilongwe North East, Maxwell Thyolera said it is becoming worrisome to see the life of top most officials in the country being hunted.
Thyolera referred to the recent attacks on the Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima and the Minister of Lands and Urban Development, Atupele Muluzi as a clear testimony that the security was being compromised.
“Can the Minster of Home affairs and Internal Security assure us that Malawians will leave in peace and that their properties will also be protected? I am saying because when respectable people in the name of Dr Chakwera are being attacked it is a big threat to the country,” he explained.
Minister of Home affairs and Internal Security, Grace Chiumia said it is the wish of the government to make sure that every Malawian is protected.
She describes the attack as unfortunate and that government was going to do all it can to ensure that the offenders are brought to book.
“We are learning it now and I would have loved if this was reported in the morning because we would have by now instituted investigations,” the Minister said.
Chiumia said Malawians should not panic as everything is being taken care of.
