Seven die in Mzimba road accident

Seven people have died after being involved in a road accident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Jere area near DAPP Teachers Training College junction along Chasato – Mzimba Boma Road.

The accident, according to Mzimba Police Deputy Spokesperson, John Nyirongo, involved a motor vehicle VW Polo Saloon registration number RU 6828 and Toyota Carina registration number NU 3004.

The VW Polo Saloon, which was driven by Daniel Kaira, was heading to Mzimba Boma from Chasato direction with four passengers on board.

On the other hand, the Toyota Carina, which was driven by Dunken Sinkhonde, was coming from Mzimba Boma direction with two passengers on board.

Upon arrival at Jere area, the driver of VW Polo Saloon failed to negotiate a right bend and had a head on collision with the oncoming Toyota Carina.

According to the district deputy police spokesperson, the drivers of the two vehicles died on the spot while five passengers died upon arrival at Mzimba District Hospital.

Only one passenger from the VW Polo Saloon vehicle, identified as Gertrude Lungu, aged 14, survived with serious injuries.

Police have only identified the name of the drivers, but are yet to know the particulars of the other deceased.
