Sheriffs impound Karonga district council vehicles
The sheriffs from high court on Friday morning impounded two vehicles of the Karonga district council for failing to pay K4 million loan to Maclean Sikumbawa, a district business tycoon.
The impounded vehicles are Toyota Prado registration number KA 2651 used to carry the District Commissioner oner (DC) and Land Cruiser registration number MG 560 AJ which was donated by the MASAF 4 recently.
A senior officials told Nyasa Times that the council was stealing money of the business tycoon by collecting revenue at his private space during former DC (Rosemary Moyo) administration.
However, Sikumbawa took the matter to the Mzuzu high court through his lawyer Christin Ghambi where the council was fined K7 million but it was negotiated up to K4 million in November last year.
“The council was supposed to pay the said loan by the end of this month (January) but were surprised to see the sheriff impounding our vehicles,” said the senior officer.
When reporters wanted to meet with the District Commissioner Richard Hara at his office, his secretary blocked them them saying he is busy.
This reporter however tried to call the mobile phone of the DC but he was not answering it.
Sikumbawa confirmed about the development but said the matter is handled by his lawyer.
