Shoprite dust refuses to settle, fires 63 workers

Dust refuses to settle at Shoprite supermarket chain, where there was tension last week arising from a strike at the company’s Lilongwe outlet.

This time around the South African retailer has decided to fire 63 employees involved in the fracas and has already replaced them with newly hired staff.

Lilongwe district labour officials have confirmed the firing of the 63 but said deliberations with the employer were still underway.

Shoprite management said in a brief statement: “We lost K45 million in revenue during the days Lilongwe shop was closed because of the fracas and the new employees have been already thrown into service with our services in Lilongwe due very soon”.

On Wednesday last week the beleaguered striking staff heavily protested through booes on interviewees who were coming out of Shoprite Lilongwe premises.

The workers staged the strike in prrotest against the coming back of one senior staff member who they accused of being heartless to his subordinates after he had earlier beaten up one staff member.
