I left this country soon after the Pastoral Letter. While still outside the country, around June 1992, I read from a very respected international newspaper that a Malawian labour activist known as Chakufwa Chihana is heading to Malawi to challenge Dr. Banda.

While voicing their opposition to abortion is understandable and worthy, I don’t see how this can be seen as the Catholic Church firmly putting the ball back in the DPP court. Anyway, why should we think the DPP will even play the ball? All they have to do is sit tight until 2019 and make sure they win the election then as well. Stronger action needed: the ball needs to be aimed at the players, not just the court they occupy.
