Silver break jinx: As Malawi Super League first round winds up

Long at last! Despite winning the TNM Super League championship more than any other team in the league within the last five years, Silver Strikers FC have not managed to win the first round during that period.

The bankers have won the Super League championship three times within the last five years but in almost all these occasions, they have had to stage late second round come-backs to win the title.

Escom United have been the specialists in as far as winning the first round is concerned, finishing as the best team of the first round four times in the last five years.

Silver players : Top the table

Perhaps the bankers have military sides Mafco and Moyale Barracks to thank for the K200,000 prize money they will be receiving from TNM for winning the first round.

The two sides at the weekend made life difficult for their senior brothers Red Lions, denying the Zomba based soldiers maximum points that could have enabled them topple Silver and win the first round.

First to frustrate the visiting soldiers from the old capital were Mafco, who held the Lions’ to a nil-all draw at the Chitowe Stadium on Saturday before Moyale did total damage- defeating the once roaring lions 2-0.

The weekend results means Silver have finished the first round on top with 31 points from 14 games. Red Lions have finished second with 28 points from 14 games played.

Mighty Wanderers, who have finished third with 26 points have another military outfit Kamuzu Barracks to thank after the side from Malawi Defence Force headquarters held Big Bullets to a 1-all draw at Balaka Stadium on Sunday. Had Bullets won the match, they would have jumped to the third position and pushed the Nomads fourth.

The Bullets have only managed to dislodge Azam Tigers from the fourth position, having closed the first round on 25 points, just a point above Tigers.

Going to the bottom zone, Kabwafu from Mzimba remain the worst performing side in the first round, having finished with a miserable 10 points from their 14 league assignments. Second from the bottom is Bvumbwe Research on 12 points just like Escom but the electricians have a better goal difference.

Break

Meanwhile, Sulom has announced that the league will take a month-long break to pave way for the ongoing Stard Bank Cup and Carlsberg Cup.

During the period, the league also says it will open the transfer window for a period of two weeks.
