Six year old drowns in Karonga

A six year old boy drowned in Karonga district  at weekend after he got stuck in the muddy waters of Malungo River, Police have confirmed.

The incident comes barely a few days after the ‘new’ Commissioner of police for the Northern Region Wilson Matinga told the media during a reception that cases of drownings were rampant in the region.

Northern Region Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Norrah Chimwala said the deceased Donald Mhango of Mwanyongo Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu, had gone with a couple of friends to bathe at the River.

“But he got stuck and his friends failed to help him. They rushed home and reported the matter,” Chimwala said.

A post mortem report indicated that the boy died due to suffocation.

Last month  a 12 year old boy also drowned in Mwazisi River in Rumphi district.
