SMEs in Malawi local product industry, game changer in driving social change

Small Scale Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malawi’s local product industry has the potential of driving social change in creating jobs among the pre-ubarn women and youths in the country.

According to Linda Zamaere creative director of Queen Tenge Brand since she started her company she has been working with local artisans especially pre-urban women and youths as they train them to make local artifacts that speaks to Malawians at scale and they have been able to grow as well as work with many local artisans especially women.

Zamaere made these sentiments during the final day for 2024 Malawi International Tourism Expo as she was on the exhibitor showcasing her creativity during this Expo through models in form of a fashion show.

“So far we have been able to create 80 jobs for our artisans as well women and our terrors. Going forward Malawians should expect export ready products that will be able to be showcased internationally and be able to bring Malawi on the global fashion,” Zamaere said.

But she was quick to react that as a company being an SME she face problem of cash flow in order to increase her production and be able to buy inputs into her products so that she can make them to be of high quality.

“Being a women, I know women face alot of challenges and I want to empower my fellow women and be able to give them an opportunity to work and support their families,” she added.

She pleaded with government to work closely with SMEs in capacity building and departments like ministry of youths should come in to support SMEs like these so that they can be able to employ more youths and be able to give them something to do inline with 2063 agenda.
