Solomonic Peacocks in Easter theatre feast

Solomonic Peacocks Theatre will have its first international theatre festival during Easter dubbed Solomonic Easter Theatre Festival (SETF).

Public Relations Officer for Solomonic Peacocks Theatre Jimmy Maole said the festival is expected to be held in Lilongwe on 3rd April at Madsoc Little Theatre and the other day at Blantyre Cultural Centre.

“The festival will be unique in nature because it will only accommodate theatrical activities namely drama, poetry, comedy, dance (traditional and contemporary) and shall also involve schools,” he said.

He said during the theatre festival workshops prior and during the festivals will be conducted for theatre groups focusing on event management, stage designing, stage lightning, entrepreneurial, public relations and marketing.

Said Maole: “Local and international performers will be given a platform to showcase their talent and artistic works during the festival.

“The Artists will be able to interact and create networks among themselves and this will help them develop collaboration projects and probably have cultural exchange programs.

“A sum of MK540, 290,000 has been budgeted for the festival and 90 local and international artists are expected to participate. We at Solomonic strongly feel that with support from Stakeholders/partners, sponsors and donors, we will be able to implement Easter Theatre Festival and develop theatre as an enterprise in Malawi which will create socioeconomic empowerment to theatre artists individually and at group level,” he said.

He added, “The festival will promote professionalism and entrepreneurship skills to theatre artists in Malawi. In the next three years to come the festival shall sustain itself.”

The aim of SETF is to promote and develop theatre industry in Malawi through arts management, cultural management, networking, audience development and Creative Entrepreneurship.

For poetry, Robert Chiwamba, Evelyn Pangani Maotcha, Nyamalikiti Mthiwatiwa, Joseph Mazeze, Hudson Chamasowa, Che Nkope are expected to perform whilst for comedy , by Difikoti and Bikiloni from Zambia, Izeki ndi Jakobo, Mr jokes and Chigubu from Zimbabwe’

Drama will be led by Kwathu Drama Group, Tikuferanji Crew, Chanco Travelling Theatre, Solomonic Peacocks Theatre, Nanzikambe Arts Theatre and Rising Choreos.

On dance, Floor Steppers, Chichiri Cultural Dance Company and Village Cultural Troupe are also on the list.

This year’s festival theme is “Theatre for life.’ The theatre feast will be in Blantyre and Lilongwe from 3rd to 6th April, 2015.
