Police in Blantyre are keeping in custody a man aged 22 for assaulting to death his biological mother Hilda Gwembere.
The suspect Rosario Luso Gwembere committed the crime when there was a misunderstanding over rental money his mother collected from their house in Zomba.
According to Blantyre Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Lameck Thembachako, the suspect was staying with his mother in Sunnyside when on the night of April 15 to 16, 2013 the suspect had a quarrel with his mother.
“Briefly, the suspect’s late father left a house in Zomba which is being rented by a certain tenant and pays money on monthly basis. The rental money was collected by the suspect’s mother but this did not go well with the son. It was that night the suspect assaulted his mother until his muscles got tired,” explained Thembachako.
According to Linda Somanje who was a younger sister to Hilda Gwembere, the deceased, was rushed to the hospital whilst receiving treatment and examination. The deceased’s body was conveyed to college of medicine mortuary for post-mortem and examination where the results showed that her left ribs were broken due to assault and she also died due to strangulation.
It is reported that the suspect has been so stubborn in the family for so long over the issue. And when police conducted a search in the suspect’s bedroom, cobs of cannabis sativa were discovered which police suspect that the accused person has been stubborn due to drugs.
The deceased aged 50 was coming from Kamwendo village, Traditional Authority Kwataine in Ntcheu district. Until her death Hilda Gwembere was a civilian secretary to the deputy commissioner of prison services in the southern region headquarters.
In a related development Police in Milare sub-station on April 12, 2013 arrested Ganizani Zema Chisanja aged 21 from Chamba village, Traditional authority Nsomba in Blantyre district for stabbing on her right chest to death his elder sister; Rhoda Lumayo aged 27.
Last month, Police in Ndirande also arrested Maganizo Mtambo aged 19 from Kameza village, Traditional authority Machinjiri in Blantyre district for assaulting his biological mother; Mrs. Erico Mabuka Mtambo aged 57 who died in the morning hours of March 01, 2013 at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) whilst on medical attention.
