South African arrested for stealing K0.5m in Malawi
Police in Malawi’s eastern district of Mangochi are keeping custody a 21 year-old South African for allegedly stealing K500,000 from a local hotel where he was working as assistant manager in the district.
The suspect, identified as Ruan De Klerk, was arrested by Mozambican police officers as he was trying to pass through that country fleeing Malawi to Tanzania, according to Mangochi Police spokesperson Rodrick Maida.
The suspect is also said to have admitted to have stolen the money which he wanted to use as transport to Tanzania where he wanted to seek greener pasture.
“De Klerk was employed as an assistant manager at one of the hotels in the district. On November 2, he left the office without coming back and his absence prompted the wife of the owner of the hotel to check in his office where she realised that money amounting to K500,000 was missing,” said Maida.
The suspect, who faces a 14 year-jail term if found guilty, was arrested in Luchinga on his way to Tanzania.
“He was repatriated to Malawi before being formally charged with theft by servant contrary to Section 286 (1) of the Penal Code,” added Maida.
De Klerk comes from Pretoria, South Africa.

A thief is a thief. Some Malawians have even murdered South African employers and stolen from them. In Malawi stealing seems to be more normal than not. Even state presidents, ministers, judges, police and army generals have not escaped the suspicions lists for theft of obscene amounts from their employer’s coffers – the public.
