Sparc Systems gives K100m to help children awaiting surgery

Technology firm Sparc Systems has donated K100 million to BEIT Cure Children’s Hospital to help fund surgery for 256 children on its waiting list.

The money is part of a K400 million fundraising drive. Sparc Systems said it forms part of its corporate social responsibility commitment.

Managing director Dr Wisely Phiri said the company had backed the initiative from the start.

“This is the commitment which started way back together with BEIT Cure to raise about K400 million as part of our corporate social responsibility,” he said. “These are people that will become our working capital in the near future.”

He said the company wanted to go beyond helping 256 children, and urged other firms to contribute towards the target.

BEIT Cure executive director Dr Rhoda Kriek thanked Sparc Systems, calling the gift “extraordinary”. She said it means many children on the waiting list can now get surgery.

“These are children who have waited years to walk without pain, to sit in a classroom with their friends, and to stop being defined by a condition that we know how to treat,” she said.
