Sparc Systems Jnr Golf break record: Van der Walt, Rodrick win

A field of 48 junior golfers took part in the  Southern Region Junior Monthly Golf Tournament which was sponsored by Sparc Systems Limited at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Saturday, the biggest that has been recorded in junior tournament in recent times, according to Golf Union of Malawi Development coach Dingani Chirwa .

“This is encouraging and we applaud parents for taking an interest in junior golf. We also commend Sparc Systems for investing in junior golf. We are now building future professional golfers for Malawi. They are leaning things really quick and you will be surprised with how some of these players will perform,” said the junior golf coach.

Sparc Systems Technical Sales Manager, Alena Chiwaya, who spoke on behalf of the Managing Director, Wisely Phiri, said they want to help build the future of golf in the country.

“Recently we supported junior tennis because we were impressed with their strategic plan. Now we are also investing in the junior golf as some of us started golf two or three years ago and we expect miracles to win yet we didn’t master the sport at a tender age.

“Our mission is like in two or three years we should produce good golfers. As a Malawian firm we are trying to show that as Malawians we can support each other to improve the standards of different sport codes,” said she.

Carlo van der Walt and Zitta Rodrick won  the tournameny.Playing off 27 handicap, van der Walt counted out Akuzike Kumsinda (36 handicap) after tying on net 71 in a tight contest that went down to the wire. Mangasulwa Kyumba (36 handicap) came third on net 75 in the boys category.

Incredibly, Rodrick (26 handicap), the winner in girls category, also had a 71 net score while her runner-up Talumba Ntaba (36 handicap) had a 75 net. Quasira Lambart (33 handicap) was third on net 80.

In the boys’ nine-hole category, Meer Mamtora emerged winner with 140 strokes followed by Rick Chikwekwe (69 strokes) while Josh Suzi-Banda was third (63 strokes). Alyssa Araujo won the girls category (64 strokes) while Lohan Siraj (69 strokes) was her runner-up.

Jessie Chirwa was the champion in the five-hole category followed by Mina Karuku while Ann-Rose Chirwa was third.

In the three-hole category, the winner was Mitty Karuku whereas three-year-old Alvin Chirwa was the runner-up.

BSC golf captain Sam Mwale expressed gratitude to Sparc Systems for their continued support.
