Standard Bank commits MK100m to youth summit in push to strengthen Malawi’s human capital

Standard Bank Malawi has announced a MK100 million sponsorship for the 2026 National Youth Summit, scheduled for 18–20 August at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

The commitment underscores the bank’s broader strategy of supporting skills development and entrepreneurship among young Malawians.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Lilongwe, chief executive Philip Madinga said the bank views investment in youth capabilities as a prerequisite for long‑term economic growth.

“When we provide them with practical skills, mentorship and the right partnerships, they are better equipped to create business, generate employment and contribute meaningfully to our country’s development,” he said.

He described the sponsorship as an investment in the country’s future productive base rather than a one‑off corporate gesture.

Madinga added that the summit will serve as a platform for idea exchange and ecosystem building, noting that Standard Bank’s partnership with the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) is intended to strengthen networks that help young people translate concepts into commercially viable solutions.

NYCOM chief executive Rhoda Gadama Misomali welcomed the support, urging other private‑sector actors to adopt a similar long‑term view of youth development.

She argued that coordinated investment is essential if Malawi is to expand opportunities for its growing youth population.

This year’s summit, held under the theme “Accelerating Progress: Reflecting on Impact, Expanding Prospects for Youth Development in Malawi,” is expected to convene more than 1,000 delegates, including policymakers, development partners and private‑sector leaders.

Organisers say the gathering will focus on practical pathways for strengthening human capital and improving youth participation in the economy.
