Standard Bank of Malawi pledges continued football sponsorship: Nomads players to share K4 m

Standard Bank, the sponsors of the prestigious Standard Bank Cup have assured the nation that they will continue bankrolling the K20 million knockout cup after the 2012-2013 edition was wrapped up last Saturday with Mighty Wanderers being crowned as deserved champions.

The financial institution has hiked the sponsorship package for the cup to K20 million from K15 million.

Standard Bank Board Directors Rex Harawa told the gathering at the Banks headquarters in City Centre during the prize presentation ceremony that they were satisfied with the way the cup was run.

“I promise that we will continue to be part of this tournament because our aim is to help improving soccer in the country,” said Harawa.

Harawa also hailed football fans and the clubs for showing good behavior during the entire tournament.

Minister of Youth and Sports Enock Chihana saluted Standard Bank for the sponsorship of the cup at the time most companies were shunning away from sponsoring trophies.

The minister also hailed the bank for promising to come back with the cup next season, saying He also said Standard Bank is indeed a government partner.

The competition’s chairperson Jabber Alide said he losing finalists will get K3.5 million while the losing semi-finalists will receive K500 000 each. The losing quarterfinalists will not be left out in the cold; they will get K250 000 each.

Alide warned clubs to desist from flouting from the rules and regulations of the competition.

He said that it was important for the clubs to abide by the cups rules and regulations to refrain from making remarks that can put the game of football into disrupt.

Meanwhile, Mighty Wanderers have announced that their players would share K4 million out of the K7 million winning prize money.

The Nomads pruned Silver Strikers 2-0 in an entertaining final match with goals from Victor Mpinganjira and Moses ‘Luba’ Chavula at Silver Stadium in the capital city of Malawi, Lilongwe.

The blue progressed to the finals after clipping Escom United and Big Bullets.
