Street lights installed along rehabilitated Liwonde-Mangochi Road

Mangochi Town Council (MTC) has said the installation of street lights along the rehabilitated Liwonde-Mangochi Road from the Forest to Namwera Roundabout will add beauty to the town, the entrance to the district’s tourism sites.

Fannie Msumuko: Vandalism is our biggest worry

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Mangochi Town Council, Fannie Msimuko said this in an interview on Wednesday at the Boma saying the lights complement the state-of-the-art Liwonde-Mangochi Road which government has constructed with funding from the African Development Bank (ADB).

She hailed government for the installation of the street lights and described it as a great relief to her council, which she said had no enough funds to install the lights.

“This is very good development and as Mangochi Town Council we are very happy with it because the street lights will add beauty to the town,” the CEO explained, adding, “My appeal is for people to own these street lights and desist from vandalizing them.”

Msimuko said the Town Council once installed street lights along the road but they were all vandalized and due to lack of funds, the Council could not rehabilitate them.

“Vandalism is our biggest worry, people tend to steal and sell Government property,” she observed noting that, “As a Council we are sensitizing the public to own these street lights as they will benefit every citizen, motorists and pedestrians alike.”

Msimuko stated that the newly installed street lights are solar powered no cost would be incurred in terms of electricity bills.

The installation of the street lights is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

Malawians let’s stop this hand clapping for the things someone is employed to do even better with our money! We should be demanding street lights everywhere and not mesmerized by street lights instaled in one patch. All the Malawi Cities especially LL the Capital are pitch black despite promises of DPP that they will be fully lit. Malawi is one country in the whole world where cities look like jungles at night! Why is APM given credit for roads that already existed and he is just renovating or maintaining? Thus his job…… period. APM should not be credited for City… Read more »

This is not the first time to have street lights in Mangochi and the issue of vandalism should not come from the Council. last time the Council was not paying to ESCOM, ndalama zimathera ma allowance. Vandalism sure should not come as an excuse……paying bills and maintenance are key to the management of the council. Otherwise this is a good development and if it were not for the looting by the DPP government Mangochi would have a good road to Makanjira and Chilipa.

My biggest worry is the poverty levels in this town. And there are few industries. And the population will tripple in the next decade. And I do not have any solution.
