An 18-year old student at Chayamba Secondary School in Kasungu is lying in agony at the district hospital after he was slashed by a panga knife on his left leg in a foiled theft of sugarcane at a farm near their school.
Police have identified the victim as Samuel Makonde,a form three scholar, and arrested the owner of the garden, 34-year old Jonathan Kazimete. He is expected to answer a charge of grievous harm.
“The Student met his fate on the night hours of 18th March but his accomplices managed to escape the wrath of the owner only him being caught and injured on his left leg from a panga knife,” said Kasungu Police Station Spokesperson Edwin Kaunda.
He explained that the owner of the sugarcane garden upon suspecting that some people were without consent harvesting his crop, started guarding in the garden and on the sad day he saw five young boys helping themselves to his crop at around 21:00 hours hence the action.
Kazimete is from Yabwalo village in traditional authority Kaomba in the same district.
It is not known whether the action of the students is due to the famous hunger that has hit many districts in the country or just out of lack of discipline.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
