Student swindles Mzuzu University K2 million

Mzuzu University has reduced the amount a student allegedly swindled the institution by putting fake needy students on a college bursary from an initial K6.3 million to K2.2 million.

Police in Mzuzu confirmed that Dumisani Kaonga, who was treasurer of the students union, swindled the money when he allegedly opened various bank accounts with various banks where the money was deposited.

The police say the figure has now been revised downwards to K2.2 million and he will soon be appearing in court t answer the charges of theft.

“He (allegedly) opened several bank accounts using several names. He did it for a period of time,” said police spokesman in Mzuzu  Martin Bwanali.

Kaonga is denying the charges.

He comes from Chikulamayembe in Rumphi.
