Surrender bank statements to ACB, activists tell DPP: Dausi says CSOs exhibiting ‘ pathological hatred’

Malawi human rights activists have told the ruling Democratic Progressive Party  (DPP)  to surrender all bank statements and other related documents to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for scrutiny following  investigations  report into the K145 million Malawi Police Service (MPS) food rations supplier Pioneer Investments who deposited into a DPP account at Standard Bank whose sole signatory is Mutharika.

Dausi:an indication of “the pathological hatred” they have towards Mutharika and DPP.

The executive director of Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) Robert Mkwezalamba said the names of the President and the DPP can only be cleared only after the graft-busting body scrutinises the bank statements and other documents clearly.

“The trust can only be restored if the ACB completes their investigations,” he said.

Mutharika and his DPP have come under intense criticism following the leaked ACB report last week which indicates the President benefited K145 million from a suspected fraudulent deal between MPS and Pioneer Investments.

Mkwezalamba also asked the ACB to own the leaked report and ensure that all its members of staff are protected and secure.

ACB director Reyneck Matemba confirmed it was probing the contract over police food but declined to give further details.

“We are about to conclude our investigations,” he  said.

The development follows civil society organisations (CSOs) under the banner of Human Rights Defenders (HRD) have asked the European Union Parliament and the United States of America (US) to impose sanctions on Malawi Government over “deteriorating levels of governance”.

The CSOs say they want the international community to intervene and have President Peter Mutharika’s foreign bank accounts frozen until the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) concludes investigations into the K145 million ‘rationgate’.

“We call upon bilateral partners to institute measures to prevent travel of the President and Cabinet to Europe and the United States until the governance situation improves. We call upon the international community to carry out a fact-finding mission,” reads the letter in part.

But government spokesperson Nicholas Dausi, who is Minister of Information and Communications Technology, said the ACB should be allowed to independently conclude the investigations.

He said the CSOs’ under the HRD banner  have “the pathological hatred” towards Mutharika and DPP.

Yes, I completely support the idea for all puplic sector organisations like government, parties, NGO, CSO…. to open up to the general public their finances, for the sake of transparency!-
There should be a mechanism in place like in the private sector with the MRAs
Electronical Fiscal Device for VAT to monitor this, supervised by an independent body, like ACB supposed to be! The privat banks would have a crucial role to play!

Search houses of DPP leaders starting with the president himself. Remember Chaponda claims the money found in his house belongs to DPP. Let him tell us who the “donors” were.

CSOs should show us their bank accounts because they are getting a lot of funds from donors and their leaders are just enriching themselves including Mkwezalamba who is one of the most corrupt CSO activists. what work have CSOs or NGOs done in our country and yet their are getting billions?

ACB=DPP=Judges=Government=Peter Mutharika. All openly corrupt. Malawians have now run out options……..tipita kuti? If DPP is to clear its name then it should appoint independent foreign investigators funded by donor agencies. The entire Malawi system is corrupt to the core! People are even stealing ziwalo za anthu for sell. This is how far down corruption/crime has gone. No one is held accountable. Prisons are full of petty thieves and yet real criminals are roaming the streets

These CSOs should just shut up now. They have tried many times to get rid of this government but all attempts have failed. Think of 50+1 Bill; K4bn for the poor villagers; Asking Chilima to stand for DPP in 2019 so that the party loses to MCP; Blue Night; Asking Atupele to step down from cabinet. Time is approaching towards elections yet the DPP is showing no signs of losing the 2019 elections. The CSOs are now panicking because they have no any other plans to weaken the DPP. They banked their hope on MCP which is slowly being consumed… Read more »

CSOs should demand to see and examine all procurement related documentation-the advertisement and determine who bid for the contract, Expressions of Interest in the tender, minutes of the evaluation committee that recommended to award. Thereafter, the CSOs should also work with STANDARDBANK WHY A SOLE SIGNATORY WAS ALLOWED TO OPERATE AN ACCOUNT where the Bank normally would demand a minimum of two to three signatories. Bankiyi ikudya nawo, abating corruption, and one needs to know at what level this may be happening and who is involved. Then share the Bank statements and publish them for all the citizens to see… Read more »

Have you already surrendered your bank statements you CSOs? We all heard that you failed to account for 90% of the funds you receive (or 90% of the CSOs failed to account for the funds they get) in the name of Malawians, have you surrendered your statements by now?

No valid point. At least you should be thankful of what the CSOs are doing on behalf of the poor Malawians.CSOs have been the mouth of the poor voiceless Malawians and they have really tried only that we have got stubborn people in the government.
