As the world commemorates World Sports Journalists Day, Sports Writers Association of Malawi (Swam) has urged local sports scribes to follow media ethics and strive for excellence when reporting sports issues.

The advice is contained in a statement by the sports journalists’ body as it joins the rest of the world in

“Swam recognizes sports journalists’ efforts in contributing to the development of sports. As we celebrate this day, we encourage local sports journalists to slave for ethics and discharge their duties
without fear or favour.

“Sports journalists should not compromise standards for the sake of gaining popularity or earning tokens of appreciation that come in the name of media awards,” reads part of the statement signed by Swam’s
general secretary Chisomo Mwamadi.

The scribes’ body has since commended Standard Bank and Rainbow Paints for being the only local sponsors with a clear criteria and bench marks for rewarding excellence to sports journalism through an
independent panel of media experts.

As part of celebrations for the World Sports Journalists’ Day, International Sports Press Association (Aips) has planned various activities in Lausanne, Paris, South America and other cities.
