Tanzanian arrested in Malawi for illegal maize export

Police in the border district of Karonga on Sunday arrested a Tanzanian national for attempting to illegally export 1200 bags of maize to Tanzania without proper documents.

The maize was loaded on two Tanzanian tracks registration numbers T696ASS/T669AUA and T799AUS/T236AUU.

The suspect, 44-year-old man Patrick Pasolo Mwinuka was nabbed at Iponga road block after lying to Police Officers that he was transporting Sunflower cake (residues from squeezed Sun flower).

“But when Police made a physical search they discovered that only few bags had Sunflower cake while the rest were bags of maize each weighing 90kilogrames,” Karonga Police Spokesperson Enock Livasoni said in a statement.

According to Livasoni Mwinuka admitted that the maize was destined for Tanzania but he did not produce any document or permit allowing him to export it to Tanzania.

Meanwhile. Mwinuka is in police custody and he has been charged with the offence of attempting to export farm produce.

He will appear before the court soon, police said.

Mwinuka hails from Mwalusanje village in Mbeya district Tanzania.
