Tembo, Kasambara, Rev Nyondo conferred honorary doctorate by University of Jerusalem

The University of Jerusalem (British American Autonomous Body) has conferred honorary doctorate degrees to Malawi’s veteran politician John Tembo, prominent lawyer Ralph Kasambara, Rev Levi Nyondo and Mrs Evelyn Jesman.

The four were conferred the honorary doctorates at Shaeffer Conference Centre in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Both Chancellor Albert Jayasign and Vice Chancellor for University of Jerusalem, Prof Prince Tuweh Gadama said the four had done outstanding work in their respective communities and that this was an honour they deserved.

He advised them to remain humble while accepting that people have noticed their contributions in Malawi society.

Kasambara gets his doctorate degree

The Chancellor observed that the honorary degrees are different from academic degrees in that academic degrees are based on one’s outstanding academic performance.

Normally, people who gets honorary doctorate do not sue prefix Dr. before their names.

Tembo was recognized for his outstanding political career in Malawi being the longest serving Member of Parliament in the country.

Kasambara, who was present at the function, was recognized for his critical contribution in the legal field in Malawi.

Rev Levi Nyondo serving as General Secretary for the Livingstonia Synod of the CCAP was recognized for his leadership and courage.

The University of Jerusalem recognised Mrs Evelyn Jesman for her unique educational journey and establishing New Era Private Schools which are said to have taught many learners in Malawi.

The graduation ceremony also saw about 25 people graduating in the fields of theology, social and computer sciences.
