What started as any ordinary day for the Phiri family in Mzimba district last Friday ended tragically when three young brothers returned home dead.

The three brothers, in a company of their friend, had gone for swimming in Rukuru River without the knowledge of their parents when they all drowned. The accident happened at Madede village T/A Chindi in the district.

Police say the four are Steve Phiri, 10 and his two young siblings identified as Hudwell and Andrew, and their six-year-old buddy, Ungwelu Phiri.

“After seeing that the children were not returning, the two families launched a manhunt and all the four were found dead and floating in Rukuru River the following day,” Mzimba police spokesperson Gift Nyirongo told a local radio on Monday.

The three deceased brothers hailed from Masula village, Chief Masula in Lilongwe while late Ungwelu was from Chief Wimbe in Kasungu district and burial took place on Monday.
