Three members of same family perish in Malawi road accident

Three members of the same family have perished in a fatal road accident which occurred at Kasitu Trading Centre in the area of Traditional Authority Kafuzira in Nkhotakota district.

The accident occurred on March 11, 2013 at about 3:00 pm.

During the time, Davie Houlton Chintengo (38) who works as the Director of Finance at Chitipa District Council was driving a Toyota Surf registration number KK 4733 from Salima to Chitipa.

Nkhunga Police Spokesperson Laban Makalani said when the driver had just passed Kasitu Trading Centre, he hit three pedestrians who were walking on the right hand side of the road as after he had avoided some bicycle cyclists who were moving near his left facing the same direction.

“According to the driver, the cyclists were cycling in an extended file and this made him to move to his right lane in order to avoid them but he ended up hitting the three victims.

“The three casualties include a father identified as Labson Banda aged 33 and his two sons namely Ackson aged 18 and Charles aged 3 years,” he said.

Makalani said the three who hailed from Chagaduka Village in the area of T/A Kafuzira in Nkhotakota died on the spot.

“During the time, the father and his 18-year-old son were escorting the three-year-old to a nearby hospital.

“Due to the impact, the driver of the vehicle, who was possibly over speeding, lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle went off the road where it overturned several times,” Makalani said.

The police publicist further said that the driver who was accompanied by a male passenger escaped death unhurt but the vehicle was extremely damaged.

“Following the incident, people at Kasitu Trading Centre rushed to the scene where they got furious with the driver and threatened to manhandle him but he was rescued by police officers who also rushed to the scene,” he added.

The incident is currently under investigations.

Meanwhile, in a related developmet, a Super Sink coach overtuned in Chitewa carrying passengers.

According to police, there were only injuries but no death was recorded.
