Police in Malawi’s southern tea growing district of Thyolo are keeping in custody a 28-year old man for allegedly sodomising eight young boys.

Thyolo Police spokesperson Edith Likaka confirmed the arrest of Duncan Mafaiti on Wednesday, 18th of January, 2012 for committing the alleged crime.

He has since been charged with sodomy.

“On 9th January this year, the suspect sodomised in eight boys aged between 6-7 years. They were all sodomised at in a row in broad day light,” said Likaka.

The Police spokesperson disclosed that when the incident occurred, none of the boys revealed until last week when one of them fell sick.

She said when he went to hospital, the boy revealed the incident because he was having difficulties relieving himself.

“Following this, all the eight children were examined by the Thyolo District Hospital and results confirmed that they were all sodomised,” she said.

Although Mafaiti has already been charged by the Police, he is yet to appear in court because of the industrial strike by judicial officers in the country.

Issues of sodomy are very common in Malawi especially in Malawi Prisons. Recently, a prisoner at Mikuyu Prison is the eastern city of Zomba was arrested for sodomising a fellow inmate.
