Thyolo MP Namakhwa dumps DPP for PP: Malawi road to 2014 polls

Another DPP Member of Parliament Kingsley Namakhwa for Thyolo Central constituency has resigned from the party to join the ruling People’s Party of President Joyce Banda,

Namakwa confirmed the development in an interview with Nyasa Times on Monday, saying he could not remain in a boat DPP that was sinking.

“I want to be with a group that will make me work better with the people. Joining PP is the right thing to do,” he said.

Namakhwa said he people in his Thyolo central constituency want development, noting that “I will serve them better by working with the government. I want to serve my constituents better. Chiefs were in a dilemma when I was in opposition.”

He has since notified the Speaker of the National Assembly on his defection.

Deputy publicity secretary for DPP Bon ‘Winiko’ Kalindo said Namakhwa is “exercising his freedom of association.”

Many MPs are quickly leaving the DPP to join the PP in what political observers say signals the growing problems in the former ruling party.

Namankhwa join the list of two MP’s namely Agness Penemulungu, and Frank Kamangala who have recently dumped the party for the ruling people’s party.

Malawi will hold tripartite elections in less than a year.
