Tiger prey on Karonga 7-1: MalawiTNM Super League
Azam Tigers inflicted total humiliation on Karonga United and their embattled coach Kondwani Mwalweni in the TNM Super League with a brutal 7-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Mwalweni sent out a makeshift side depleted by departures and suspensions – but even this cannot excuse the manner in which they were outclassed in all parts of the pitch and swept aside with such ease by the Kau-Kau boys.
Bright Munthali was Tigers inspiration with four goals of his Kau-Kau career.
Karonga United strike late in the second half-represented no measure of consolation for a dispirited, broken Crocodiles of Karonga.
For Karonga it was a performance, or lack of one, that proved the folly of his summer of transfer inaction.
This result underscores the gulf that has opened up between Tigers and Karonga and Mwalweni will now seek to address the weaknesses in his squad before their next assignment against Civo United in Mzuzu.
Gerald Phiri’s faith in the team that lost 2-1 last week to Mafco was rewarded with another thrilling attack-minded performance.
Karonga’s uncertainty was partly explained by the unfamiliar make-up of their team, but the flaws were swiftly exposed by the manner in which Tigers took the lead.
Tigers corner kick from Yamikani Chester was inventive but Karonga’s failure to react was ominous for what lay ahead, allowing Munthali to head past Loyld Munthali.
And Tigers ensured the visitors were punished heavily as Munthali added the second after 6 minutes. The pint-sized striker found space just outside the area and curled a perfect finish high beyond Karonga keeper.
It made little difference amid the carnage of the second half as Karonga were torn apart amid a torrent of goals, near misses and saves from the desperately exposed Munthali.
It barely seemed possible for matters to get worse for Karonga, but the agony increased when Tigers pumped in more goals up to 7 goals.
Kondwani Mwalweni and his troops cut a despairing figure as they walked back to the dressing room at the final whistle after one of the darkest days of their careers.
Karonga’s humiliation comes, 24 hours after they were also clobbered 4-0 by Be Forward Wanderers.
Their next assignment is against Civo United in Mzuzu.
In another encounter, Premier Bet Wizards piled up more pressure to Max Bullets with a 2-1 victory at Mpira Village Stadium.
