Time for politics is over: One Malawi, One nation!

Professor Peter Mutharika has won the presidential election by 36 percent. In a true sense this means 64 percent of Malawians across the length and breadth of the country rejected him with the bulk of his votes coming from his base in the Southern Region.

But Malawi chose first past the post system of choosing its president and so it goes without saying that, everything being equal, Mutharika is the president for all Malawians.

Which is why, here at Nyasa Times, we congratulate the President-elect and wish him the best of luck as he fulfils all promises his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) made to Malawians during the just ended tough campaign.

As to the other losing candidates, we say we can only have one president at a time and now is not time for rancor and electoral vindictiveness but nation-building.

If at all they have any complaints, the courts are the right place to go in search of arbitration and not the streets where deaths of innocent people are the likely end result.

Time for politics is over. What remains are the interests of the nation.

We at Nyasa Times will continue our watchdog role and also engage in developmental journalism. Malawi needs to attain economic growth and development.

Once again, bravo Peter Mutharika!
