TNM decries Sapota Mapeto declining support: Evirom FC pocket K357

Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) Limited has expressed concerns over poor response Super Leagues football clubs’ supporters have given to the Sapota Mapeto promotion, which is designed to help clubs generate extra revenue.

The promotion, which was launched in June this year has, for the past month, seen a decline in number of support football supporters give to their respective clubs through SMSs with only 43, 453 SMSs sent in the month of September.

The decline has even affected the revenue teams pocket every month with Big Bullets pocketing K339,024 down from K1 million it got in the previous month.

Other teams who have also faced the decline are Mighty Wanderers who only pocketed K356,748 down from K947,415.00 in August while Silver Strikers will receive K89,964.Evirom FC....Photo Jeromy Kadewere

The poorest performing team in the competition is Evirom FC which will pocket a meager K357.

In interview, TNM Public Relations Specialist, Brian Mungomo Jnr attributed the decline to several factors with the major one being poor performances by the teams in the league, which is in its second round.

Mungomo cited the coming in of English Premier League as another factor that has killed the pomp in supporters to participate more in the SMS promotion.

“We feel that the poor performance of some big teams is not motivating their supporters to participate more in this competition. Teams are not doing well in the league and that kills passion in most of their followers. There was also a two-week Super League break, which we feel contributed to the decline as well not to mention the coming in of English Premier League, which has gained momentum right now,” explained Mungomo.

Mungomo disclosed that the promotion was designed to help supporters express their royalty towards their favorite teams by generating extra revenue through SMSs.

He said meanwhile, they have engaged in aggressive marketing promotion for people to understand better the Sapota Mapeto promotion, and motivate them to participate for the benefit of their teams.

“Football clubs have also responsibility to ensure that they motivate their supporters to join this promotion by sending more SMSs which will translate in more revenue for them in return,” he added.

So far the Sapota Mapeto promotion has given out to football clubs K5.8 million since it started in June with Bullets getting the biggest share of K2,725,599, Nomads K2,227,313 and Silver Strikers K604,620.

Meanwhile, Silver Strikers’ Chamama Kasungu-based businessman, James Chipoka has won42’ Flat Screen LG Tv. previously, it has been won by Nomads and Bullets supporters.
