Tonga Chief Mkumbira dead: ‘He fell in his bathroom’
Outspoken Senior Chief Mkumbira of Nkhata Bay has died, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development spokesperson Muhlabase Mughogho and Nkhata Bay district commissioner Rodney Simwaka have confirmed.

The Senior Chief died on Tuesday afternoon after he fell in his bathroom and was pronounced dead on arrival at Nkhata Bay District Hospital.
Mkumbura was known for his candid talk, speaking his mind openly on controversial issues.
He recently asked people in the country to accept the existence of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people (LGBTIs), further urging them to stop discriminating against them.
The District Commissioner said the office was discussing a funeral program with the royal family.
The problem with the Atonga is that everyone wakes up and claims to be master of the history of the Tonga people. These fake historians do even claim to have come from the great lakes. There are a set of questions which should be addressed a) who were the leaders in your migration? B) which people did you confront in journey to the current home? RIP
He was about to be installed as Paramount Chief of Tonga’s in Malawi and abroad. We Tonga’s are the only tribe in Malawi without a Paramount. Ngonis of Mzimba have Mbelwa v, Ngondes have Kyungu, Tumbukas have Chikulamayembe, Chewas, Lomwes, etc etc have their own. Very sad to loose a man of integrity. Ada Mkumbira, ini ndewakuliya ukongwa pakutaya munthu wazeru nge imwi, fumu yafundu, munthu wakusambila, tekweniko pa chisulu panu kwazisuka nyifwa yinu fumu…. Go cheti ndimi penapa….bonani.
May the soul of TA Nkumbira rest in peace. No, it is not true that Nkumbira was to be installed Paramount Chief. the most senior chieftency in NB is uMankhambira, the original chief who ruled ftom Usisya to Dwambazi. Mankhambiea was the one who had negotiated with Robert Laws on the establishment of Bandawe Mission.. it is very unfortunate that the Mankhambira royalty is entangled in inheritance disputes for over 10 years now, creating space for other chiefs to grab the NB chieftency leadership
Saddened by your death Papa!
