Tough games await Carlsberg Cup quarterfinals

Football Association of Malawi on Monday conducted a draw for Carlsberg Cup round of 16 with three teams from each region joining the Super League in the national phase of the K30 million Cup.

But the draw has not favoured any team in the Super League should they progress to the quarterfinals.

Any team would be required to dig deeper into reserves to progress in the competition.

In round of 16 the winner of Azam/Bvumbwe date Silver Strikers FC, Mafco FC face Dedza Young Soccer Stars or Karonga United, Mighty Wanderers FC host Chikhwawa United or Mzuzu City Rangers.

Red Lions FC host, Kasungu Medicals or Epac, Kamuzu Barracks FC face Airborne Rangers or Civo United, Ndirande Icons or Mzuzu United date Big Bullets FC, Chilumba/Support) line up Moyale Barracks FC, Blue Eagles FC vs Zomba/BT Utd.

In the first quarterfinal draw Red Lions/Kasungu Medicals/ Epac are in collision course with defending champions Kamuzu Barracks, Airborne Rangers and Civo United while Blue Eagles/Zomba United, Blantyre United date winners of Chilumba.Support,Moyale Barracks.

In the third quarterfinal Azam Tigers/Bvumbwe Research/Silver Strikers vs Ndirande Icons/ Mzuzu United and Silver Strikers while Mighty Wanderers/Mzuzu City/Chikwawa United vs Mafco/Dedza Young Soccer Stars/Karonga United complete the fourth quarterfinal game.

The draw has also pulled the country’s three big teams Bullets, Silver and Mighty Wanderers in collision course by the semifinal stage.

Bullets and Silver could face each other in the quarterfinals if they will win their round preimary round games while one of them could face Wanderers in the semifinal.

FAM Commercial Manager Caper Jangale said the games would start on Friday but the full fixture would be released in due course talking into consideration Super League games.

“The games will start on Friday but the Competitions Officer [Gomegzani Zakazaka] will have to consult Sulom to see how the Carlsberg Cup can be accommodated since the Super League fixtures for this week have already been released,” Jangale said.
