Tragedy: Madman kills six in 30 min, set ablaze
Malawi Police are investigating circumstances that led to a psychiatric patient to go on rampage and butchered six relations- one after another- in a space of 30 minutes in the central region district
of Dowa.
The 22-year-old mad man identified as Lemison Kapambe, hacked to death the six villagers at Pondani, in the area of Chief Kayembe on Sunday morning.
Mponela Police Public Relations officer Kondwani Kandiado said the mad man who was using a hoe also injured one person who is currently battling for life at Mponela Rural Hospital.
The victims include four children aged between three and six years, a 19-year-old girl who was scheduled to engage her sweetheart same day and a 92-year-old helpless granny.
“The mad man was caught by the angry villagers who reacted by setting him on fire. And as I am speaking he is also no more,” said the police spokesperson.
However, Kandiado who indicated that the psychiatric patient was well known in the area, said police were investigating the matter to find out what really happened for him to butcher six people within such a short period.
“We are investigating the matter because we are equally wondering how he did it though according to village headman Pondani, he did it very fast and there was nobody to rescue the victims,” said Kandiado.
According to village headman Pondani the deceased were all expected to be laid to rest in the village on Monday afternoon.
